36 members of the European Parliament wrote to Amazon CEO Bezos, asking whether his company is employing intelligence personnel to monitor EU politicians, union members and Amazon employees.
The letter was drafted by Leila Chaibi, a congresswoman from the French far-left party “Unyielding France”, and signed by 36 congressmen. Most of these members are from left-wing political parties or the Green Party.
These lawmakers said in the letter: “We are very worried about your intentions: Does Amazon’s surveillance intentionally target union members, Amazon workers, and political representatives (including us) who may criticize their activities?”
This letter was written after Amazon removed two “intelligence analyst” positions from its job advertisements. Earlier last month, it was reported that Amazon was hiring two intelligence analysts, preferably proficient in French and Spanish, to be responsible for tracking the “labor organization threat” within the company. This caused criticism from activists and news organizations, and Amazon was forced to withdraw. Recruitment information is down.
The EU member of Parliament wrote in the letter: “We are concerned about whether European unions and local, national or European elected representatives are affected by this’threat monitoring’ method aimed at suppressing collective action and organizing unions.”
