The startup Zoox obtained permission from California authorities on Friday to test its self-driving cars without a back-up driver in the car. This is a victory for Amazon. The e-commerce giant acquired Zoox in June. .
Amazon has been actively expanding in the field of self-driving technology. At the beginning of last year, the company participated in a $530 million financing round for self-driving car startup Aurora Innovation.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles issued a statement saying that under the new license, Zoox will be able to test two self-driving cars without a backup driver on designated streets near the headquarters in Foster City.
Other companies that already have licenses include Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, and Chinese startups AutoX and Nuro.
