All three Crysis return in a remastered collection that slightly updates shooters that were spectacular a decade ago.
A year ago Crytek remastered the first Crysis with a version that slightly updated the 2007 classic for consoles and PC. On paper it provided a good amount of graphical enhancements – especially on the most modern platforms – such as ray-tracing , 8K resolution, revised textures, new particle effects, and more, but the Saber Interactive adaptation debuted with some technical and parametric errors. Many this version barely improved the original: it looked good because the original was already a true benchmark against which to put our computer equipment to the test, but it was far from causing the impact of a decade ago. However, it did not make much sense to improve the first Crysisand leave its aftermath in oblivion; now Crytek and Saber bring us the Crysis Remastered Trilogy , a collection with the three Crysis that lets us see the evolution of the saga, its successes and errors.
Maximum shielding
Crysis Remastered Trilogy includes Crysis Remastered , Crysis 2 Remastered, and Crysis 3 Remastered . In September 2020 we analyzed Crysis Remastered so we recommend your reader for information about the original game since it is also part of this pack.
Crysis 2 was released in 2011 and caused great expectations at the time, because unlike the first Crysis – which arrived on PS3 and Xbox 360 some time after the PC version – it debuted simultaneously on consoles and computer. Could these machines with the CryEngine 3? What would its performance be? Would the interaction with the environment be compromised? The result was quite acceptable, although obviously with cuts compared to a powerful PC. However, the players also felt that the sequel was less ambitious than the first , since the open island of the first was replaced by action in New York, an urban jungle … but not as lush and even original as the Crysis environments.

Perhaps to move away from the theme of its previous projects – Crysis and Far Cry -, due to the influence of the overwhelming success of Call of Duty or the technical limitations of releasing the engine on three platforms, Crytek opted for a more linear and guided game, something that supposed advantages and disadvantages and the rejection of some fans. Alcatraz, its new hero, has the same suit as Nomad in Crysis , so that once again we are facing a shooter where the Nanosuit is the true protagonist of the gameplay: a technology that gives us speed and superhuman strength, which allows us to use certain objects on the scene to damage enemies, activate armor that deflects shots or pure Predator- style invisibility , always with the limitation of the consumption of an energy bar. To this must be added the special vision to mark objectives and a good arsenal of weapons.
‘Crysis Remastered’ was released last year, but you will also find it in this collection. At the time it was a surprise for the graphics and interactivity with the jungle.
The title liked it because, apart from the undeniable spectacular, the nano-suit once again offered flexibility in strategies , in much smaller areas than the first Crysis but still wide arenas where to experiment with tactics. However, the story and the characters never interest us enough, and for the player who came from the Crysis map these scenarios felt too limited. It is perhaps the least inspired playable level of the trilogy, although it can be enjoyed if we put our expectations aside. You can find out more with our original analysis .
Crysis 3 debuted in 2013 and ended the trilogy. In playable aspects of the nano-suit there are no major differences except for some new ability. Of course, although we were going back to New York again, this is a post-apocalyptic version that tries to take the urban theme of Crysis 2 with the wild nature of Crysis , and that is something that is seen in the design of the areas, more open than its predecessor – at the cost of dispersing the confrontations more than necessary.
This sequel once again enchanted for its cast of weapons, among which a practical bow stands out, very prominent in the promotion, and graphics that once again put the limit to the machines , although once again the story did not hook much, the campaign it became short – several hours less than Crysis 2 – and the gameplay began to be outdated despite the polishing that was done with each delivery; many described it as a Crysis 2.5 . Crytek simply couldn’t get over the surprise of the first Crysis even if Crysis 3 did some things better. You can find out more with our original analysis .
Crysis 3’s campaign is short and shows signs of exhaustion, although it expanded the combat zones a bit compared to Crysis 2.
Accepting that it is an irregular saga, Crysis is more than a technical demo . One of the advantages of the lurch that Crytek gave with the design of the games is that each player will find one that best suits their shooter style ; there will be an audience that enjoys that open area of the former, while others will prefer a more direct development or an intermediate point between the two. We have complaints about how little it risks in the creative part, artificial intelligence or the scarce evolution -involution in some cases- of the gameplay between sequels, but the collection is a good excuse to see the trilogy with more perspective and the work of Crytek as a video game developer, not just an underused graphics engine.
The remastering
The remastering work with Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 is similar to the one we have with the first Crysis . The first thing to note is that it comes to PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC with a price of 49.99 euros -the three in the pack-, but for some reason Crytek, which years ago championed graphic advancements, has not developed native versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S. Yes, in these systems some improvements are achieved and it works with dynamic resolution –between 1080p and 4K- at 60 images per second without notable problems, with the improvements in lighting, characters, weapons and revised environments or updated textures that are promised in the remastering , but I could make better use of these systems with launches designed specifically for them – eliminating loads, even more effects, taking advantage of the DualSense …-.
The graphic jump will depend on whether our experience with the series was on consoles or on PC. On PS3 and Xbox 360 the resolution was around 720p and 30 images per second, so the response on the pad will be better, we will appreciate more the details during the heat of the shootings and as with any action game those 60 fps are greatly appreciated . If we go to detail, we can still see rock models with visible edges, from time to time a texture sings – perhaps it has not been updated like the rest – and the vegetation in certain areas is a bit neglected; more than a decade of graphic advancements is a lot, even for monsters like the Crysis . Moreover, facial capture and animations in Crysis 3they hold up well, and where the game shines the most is in the wide views of its settings – especially in Crysis and Crysis 3 -. They won’t go through next-gen games , but it’s hard to believe that some are 10 or older.
With the remastering the multiplayer of the games is lost . These modes failed to attract the general public, Crysis always attracted its campaigns and graphics more, but it is a pity because the online game of Crysis 3 was one of its strengths.
The remaster looks and plays better than the console versions, but the PC user will not see a notable improvement.
Conclusions
The collection with the three remastered Crysis is much more palatable than the idea of releasing only the first, even if that is the most remembered episode. A saga with its ups and downs, some virtues – the strategic use of the suit’s abilities is still fun and gives flexibility when facing each situation – and specific failures in rhythm, history or the design of combat arenas according to the Crysis of the Let’s talk. Yes, these versions are clearly superior to the ones we saw on consoles and you can justify your purchase again if you love the series or if you have been curious about Crytek games, but the improvements are rather small and in essence it is the PC version with other lighting. With the loss of visual muscle, which was one of his great assets, he hides worse playable deficiencies that have always been there.
