Naija Tech News on December 3, Apple Inc. was recently accused by Geoscope Technologies Pte. Ltd of infringing 6 patents related to the field of mobile device geolocation services. The iPhone and Apple Watch are the two devices that the company believes infringe its intellectual property.
Naija Tech News learned that Geoscope is a Singapore company registered and operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA. The company said the original inventors of the six technical patents will testify in court.
Location-based services refer to software services that use geographic data to provide information to users, or perform other functions for users based on their location. Location-based services mainly include maps, navigation services (such as driving directions), local search (such as finding nearby restaurants), social networking, targeted advertising, and more.
The company wrote in the lawsuit:
Apple has recognized the importance and benefits of location-based services. For example, one of Apple’s websites describes Apple’s Location Services as saying “Location Services allow Apple and third-party applications and websites to collect and use information based on your iPhone or Apple Watch’s current location to provide various location-based services”.
For example, an app might use your location data with a location search query to help you find nearby coffee shops or theaters, or your device might automatically set its time zone based on your current location.
