Apple has just launched the new Apple Watch Series 6 and the affordable Apple Watch SE, as well as two new iPads-the 2020 iPad Air and the eighth generation iPad. iPad will come with a data cable and AC adapter as usual, while Apple Watch will no longer come with a charger, only a magnetic charging cable.
Apple’s reason for this change is simple, based on reducing its environmental impact. The company’s logic is that if you want to buy an Apple Watch, you probably already have a Lightning-based charger at home.
Apple may think that iPad buyers are potential first-time Apple consumers, and they probably do not yet have a Lightning-based charger at home. Therefore, the iPad will continue to include a charger.
At the Apple press conference on September 15, Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, responded to the cancellation of the Apple Watch charger, “Sometimes, what matters is not what we did, but what we didn’t do. What. We know that customers have been accumulating USB power adapters, and producing millions of unnecessary adapters consumes resources and increases our carbon footprint . So this year, we will remove USB power adapters from Apple Watch.”
In addition, Apple also stated that since 2016, its carbon footprint has been reduced by 35% and is committed to further reducing its environmental footprint. By 2030, Apple is expected to achieve 100% carbon neutrality, including its supply chain and products.
When purchasing Apple Watch Series 6, Apple’s official website also reminded, “In order to achieve our environmental goals, Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 3 and Apple Watch Nike do not come with a power adapter. Please use your existing Apple Watch power adapter, or purchase a new power adapter before checkout.”
Naijatechnews learned that the more expensive titanium alloy Apple Watch Edition and Apple Watch Hermès will still be equipped with chargers, which may be due to their smaller production volume.
