Andreas Mundt, head of the German antitrust department, said that the conflict between Apple and Epic Games has aroused “great interest” and expressed concern about the duopoly of the app store market.
Mundt told reporters at the annual press conference of the German Federal Antitrust Agency that the case highlights that app stores constitute a competition issue that regulators are only beginning to realize. Although his agency has not launched an investigation, he said that this issue does not exceed its jurisdiction.
“One thing is clear: the app store is an interesting biome, simply because there are only two in the world.” Mundt said, referring to Apple’s App Store and Google Play. “On this planet, every app developer needs to enter their door – to be careful, this is really interesting.”
The European Union is already investigating Apple to examine whether the company unfairly forced software makers to use Apple’s own in-app payment system, which would normally give Apple a 30% commission. In the United States, the iPhone maker has been involved in a fierce legal action over the same issue, and the company is in a fierce battle with Fortnite game maker Epic.
