Apple is improving the performance of self-developed GPU: but high-end solutions need to wait a few years
Apple released Apple Silicon in the 2020 WWDC keynote, which also led to other discoveries. For example, Apple will abandon AMD’s GPU support and use its own ARM-based solution instead.
However, there seems to be a lot of room for improvement. The whistleblower believes that although Apple continues to improve GPU processing capabilities, it will take several years to be ready to use some high-end solutions.
The whistleblower Jioriku’s tweet talked about Apple’s efforts to improve GPU performance, but since “all great things” take time to develop, it may take us several years to find a suitable dedicated solution. This may mean that although the first ARM-based MacBooks are expected to be available later this year, Apple may suffer some impact on GPU performance compared with AMD’s existing solutions.
Of course, we can’t ignore Apple’s efforts in GPU. Let’s take a look at the GPU running in the A12Z Bionic; in the OpenCL test, it beats AMD’s Ryzen 5 4500U and Intel’s Core i7-1065G7 GPU .
Therefore, it will take some time to expect a more powerful Apple GPU solution.
