On November 19th, Facebook’s new regulations will reduce the display content of users’ personal information and prevent sensitive information such as the user’s sexual orientation from being known by others. The social media company also plans to remove “interested in” areas, home addresses and other information that could indicate a user’s sexual orientation.
In a statement to TechCrunch, a Facebook spokesperson said:
Our goal is to make Facebook easier to navigate and use, and we’re removing some profile fields, including interests and home addresses.
We are sending notifications to those who filled out these fields to let them know that they will be removed. This change does not affect anyone sharing this information about themselves on Facebook.
Naijatechnews understands that, such as TikTok and Meta’s Instagram, do not provide more in-depth information fields, but are added as part of the resume. As more and more people are now aware of how their information is used by social media for targeted advertising, it is no longer desirable to fill it out.
