Oculus Quest 2 head-mounted VR display will launch a new firmware update this year, allowing developers to mix and add real-world video images in the game, bringing mixed reality Game experience. This function is implemented through the new Passthrough API , and developers can apply filters and effects to real-world images. Oculus said that the device can not only be used for games, but also can be combined with physical office work on the desktop, keyboards, etc. to achieve remote collaborative office and improve productivity.
This mixed reality feature allows users to interact with the environment. Officially, this functional API will be provided to Unity developers first , and other VR development platforms will be supported in the future.
Regarding privacy, Oculus stated that applications using the Passthrough API cannot insert cards or store real-world images or videos through Oculus Quest 2’s sensors. The original images from the sensors will be processed on the local device.
