A new patent submitted by Samsung appeared in the WIPO, demonstrating a foldable smartphone with new features. Samsung has made smartphones with a rotating front camera module in the past, but the patent shows that the rotating camera is paired with a foldable device for the first time. The patent is titled “Foldable electronic device with rotating camera and its photography method.”
This patent describes a foldable smartphone with a rotating camera and a shooting method based on the rotating camera. Samsung wrote in the patent that when manufacturing traditional electronic devices, the orientation of the camera lens is fixed. To obtain images from other angles, users must change the orientation of the smartphone itself.
In order to solve the dilemma that users must change the direction of the smartphone to take pictures from different angles, the patent describes a rotating camera that can keep the smartphone in the same direction but allows taking pictures from different angles. As with most patents, some wording is confusing.
Essentially, Samsung said that a foldable smartphone with a rotating camera can check the folding angle of the case and the posture of the case to predict the user’s intention when taking pictures. The lens will be adjusted according to the direction of the rotating camera, so that the shooting direction is in line with the user’s shooting intent.
