TikTok is an app where users upload short videos to their fans. At the end of every month, tiktok is estimated to have over 100 million active users and has taken over the world.
It was formerly known as Musical.ly before it was changed to TikTok in early 2018. The app revolves around sharing 15-60 second video clips, which are set to music that is licensed from artists and their record labels.
TikTok is split into two main feeds. The first page is the For You PAGE, an algorithmically generated stream of videos similar to Instagram’s Explore page. Swipe left and you’ll find the other, Following, which features uploads from people you are following on the platform.
You’ll notice to the right of every video a series of icons. The first will take you to the profile of the user who posted it. Then there’s a heart, which functions just like hearts, or likes, on Instagram. Next are comments, then a right-pointing arrow for sharing individual TikToks to other platforms. Click the arrow if you want to copy the link to a specific TikTok, for example, to share it on Whatsapp and other social media platforms to grow your followers or to share a trending video.
New to TikTok, Here Are Some Tips Before You Get Started
The first thing you’ll need is a pair of headphones or AirPods. There’s just no way to enjoy TikTok with the sound off or using your phone speaker. After you download the app, you can immediately start browsing videos. But in order to post or publish any video, you need to sign up for an account.
You can make an account using your email, your phone number, or a third-party platform like Facebook. The app automatically assigns you a username but you can change it later if you don’t like it.
