Experiment: Measurement of (H) of Ceiling And (g)

Published

on

At the end of this article, we are going to measure the height of ceiling and acceleration due to gravity (g)

AIM

To measure the height of ceiling and the acceleration due to gravity by a simple pendulum.

APPARATUS

Pendulum bob, thread, two meter rules, stop watch and a reference mark.

THEORY

PROCEDURE

Suspend the pendulum bob from a point on the ceiling with the bob nearly reaching the floor and keep a reference mark at the equilibrium position of the bob. Measure the height, h of the bob above the floor. Set the bob swinging through a small angle and then record the time for 20 complete oscillation of the bob. Repeat the experiment and record the mean value. Wind-up 30cm of the pendulum thread each time and repeat the experiment for four (4) more heights of the bob above the floor. For each of the height h of the bob above the floor, record the time for 20 oscillation of the bob twice and record the value. Record all measurements as provide on the report sheet attached.

QUESTION

  1. Show up the table

2. Plot the graph of T^2 against h

3. The equation for the period of oscillation does not involve the Mass of the pendulum bob. Why?

Answer:

This is when the mass of the pendulum bob does not affect the period, mean while as the mass increases so as the force on the pendulum is. But the acceleration remain the same.

4. Suppose you doubled the mass of the pendulum bob and that of the thread, while its length is kept constant. Would the simple pendulum run fast or slow?

Answer:

It would run at the same rate before it is doubled since mass does not affect the rate of a pendulum oscillate.

5. From equation (7) above, show that h=H when T=0.
