Facebook announced on Wednesday that it has reached a partnership with Ray-Ban manufacturer Luxottica to release its first smart glasses in 2021 .
“After staying with their team for a while and visiting the factory, I know they are the right partners who will help us combine the best technology with the best glasses.” Facebook CEO Mark Zack Mark Zuckerberg said in a live broadcast of Facebook Connect, an online event for his virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) products.
Facebook and Luxottica will start a multi-year collaboration to produce smart glasses .
“I can’t go into all the details of this product, but it is indeed the next step on the road to augmented reality glasses.” Zuckerberg said. “And it looks good.”
Zuckerberg also announced that Facebook plans to release Project Aria, a research device that the company will use for learning in the process of developing consumer smart glasses.
Facebook hardware chief Andrew Bosworth (Andrew Bosworth) said that Facebook employees and contractors will start wearing Project Aria glasses on company campuses and public places in September. He said that the glasses are not for sale and do not have augmented reality capabilities, but they can capture video, audio, eye tracking and location data, allowing Facebook to use these data to help develop its augmented reality smart glasses.
“This is a kind of research equipment that will help us understand how to develop the software and hardware required for truly effective augmented reality glasses,” Bosworth said.
Bosworth said that Facebook will train employees who wear Project Aria glasses and tell them when and where they can wear this research equipment. For example, sensitive places such as toilets will be restricted areas. He said that sensitive identifiable details such as faces or vehicle license plates will be eliminated, and then Facebook will use the data collected by this device for research. In addition, he said that these employees will wear clothing that is easily recognized as Facebook employees.
