According to foreign media reports, it has been nearly a year and a half since the three major operators in South Korea officially opened 5G commercial services in April last year. Many countries have joined the ranks of 5G commercial use. 100 telecom operators have launched 5G commercial services.
In terms of 5G commercial use, Europe has launched 5G commercial services in more than ten countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy. However, France, one of the major European countries, is not at the forefront of 5G commercial use.
Although 5G commercial services have not yet been launched, France is also planning to launch 5G, and their 5G spectrum auction officially started on Tuesday.
Judging from the information published on the official website of Arcep, the French regulatory agency for electronic communications, postal and printed media, the auction launched on Tuesday is the unused spectrum between 3.4-3.8GHz, a total of 11 segments, each 10MHz, planned to be used before the end Launched 5G commercial networks in some cities in France.
There are a total of 4 telecom operators participating in the auction of 11 5G spectrum in France, namely Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, Orange and SFR. On the day of the auction, the four telecom operators have conducted four rounds of auctions, and the auction price for each section of spectrum has reached 85 million euros. The fifth round of auctions will begin on Wednesday local time, and the starting price of each 5G spectrum will be increased to 90 million euros.
However, the information on Arcep’s official website also shows that they only provided 11 segments of 5G spectrum for auction, but the four telecom operators demanded 13 segments, which exceeded the number they could provide.
The 5G spectrum auction launched by France on Tuesday was originally calculated to be carried out in April this year, but due to the impact of the epidemic, they were postponed to September. Through the 5G spectrum auction, France is expected to obtain 2.17 billion euros in revenue.
Before this auction, four French telecom operators had obtained 50MHz 5G spectrum resources at a fixed price of 350 million euros. French regulators have restricted the 5G spectrum resources of each telecom operator to less than 100MHz. Ensure that every telecom operator has a chance, so in the bidding process, each telecom operator can only obtain up to 50MHz of 5G spectrum.
