Starting from next month, all new source code repositories created on GitHub will be named “main” instead of “master”, aiming to remove unnecessary slavery related terms and use Replaced with more inclusive terms.
The GitHub repository is where users and companies store and synchronize their source code projects. By default, GitHub uses the term “master” to refer to the major version of the source code repository. Developers make a copy of “master” on their own computer, add their own code to it, and then merge the modified content back into the “master” repo.
The existing repository with “master” set as the default branch will remain as it is.
“By the end of this year, we will make existing repositories seamlessly rename their default branches,” GitHub said.
Companies and major open source projects such as Microsoft, IBM, Twitter, Red Hat, MySQL, Linux Kernel and OpenBSD have agreed to revise their technical terminology by the summer of 2020. GitHub was one of the first companies to express support for this change, when its CEO revealed in June that they were already looking for alternatives to “master”.
Naijatechnews learned that the Git project, which is the basic software of GitHub, has also announced a similar plan, at least in the future to provide warehouse owners with the option of customizing the default warehouse branch.
