According to reports, Google’s (Google) CEO said on Thursday that the company plans to pay publishers around the world $1 billion in news expenses over the next three years.
For a long time, news publishers have been struggling with the world’s most popular Internet search engine to obtain the cost of content usage, especially the “struggle” of European media groups is the most intense.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai (Sundar Pichai) said that this new product called Google News Showcase will be launched in Germany first. Google has signed contracts with German newspapers such as “Der Spiegel”, “Stern” and “Der Spiegel”, and in Brazil with “Folha de S. Paulo”, “Band” and “Infobae” signed.
At the same time, this product will also be launched in Belgium, India, the Netherlands and other countries. Approximately 200 publishers in Argentina, Australia, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, and Germany have also signed up for this Google product.
Pichai said in a blog post: “This project promises to pay publishers. This is also our largest financial project to date. It can create and curate high-quality content for different online news services. “
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, achieved net profit of 34.3 billion U.S. dollars last year and nearly 162 billion U.S. dollars in revenue.
Google News Showcase allows publishers to select and display their stories, and publish them on Google News (Google News), both Android and Apple devices.
Pichai said: “This approach is different from our other news products because it relies on a single publisher’s choice of what news to show readers and how.”
The German publisher Spiegel Group welcomed the project.
Stefan Ottlitz, Managing Director of Der Spiegel, said: “With News Showcase and new ways of integrating editorial content like Spiegel, Google has expressed their seriousness in supporting high-quality news in Germany. We It’s great to be involved from the start.”
News Corp, which had urged EU antitrust regulators to take action against Google, also expressed enthusiasm for this project.
News Corp CEO Robert Thomson (Robert Thomson) said in a statement: “We commend Google for its emphasis on quality news and its understanding of the dysfunctional and almost dystopian editorial ecosystem. There will be complex negotiations in the future. But the principles and precedents have been established.”
However, the European Publishers Council (EPC) is critical of this matter. The members of the committee include News UK, The Guardian, Pearson, New York The New York Times and Schibsted.
Angela Mills Wade, Executive Director of EPC, said: “By launching a product, they (Google) can set rules and conditions that undermine legislation designed to create conditions for fair negotiations, while claiming that they are Funding for news production.”
Currently, Google is negotiating with French publishers, the latter is one of the most criticized publishers, while Australia wants to force Google and Facebook to share advertising revenue with local media groups.
Google’s funding for news organizations has disappointed other Internet publishers, such as the weather website and the recipe tool website, who say that Google has hurt their revenue.
