On the evening of August 27th, the Chinese company BrainCo of the Harvard Innovation Lab announced today that it has developed BrainOS, a human intelligence operating system with a brain-computer interface, which can collect human brain signals non-invasively, saying that “the field of human-computer interaction has entered a new stage.”
It is reported that BrainCo is a Chinese brain-computer interface company and the first Chinese team incubated by the Harvard University Innovation Lab.
BrainCo said that the brain-computer interface refers to the interface and bridge established between the human brain, intelligent hardware, and the Internet, so that the electrical signals of the brain can directly interact with the electrical signals of the computer. At present, brain-computer interface technologies can be divided into two categories: one is human brain and machine interface, and the other is human brain and computer interface. According to the connection between the system and the human brain, it can be divided into two types: invasive and non-invasive brain-computer interface.
The advantage of invasive technology is that it can obtain information directly from the cerebral cortex, avoiding the attenuation of nerve signals due to skull obstruction. The disadvantage is that craniotomy surgery still has risks, and the implanted electrodes will be surrounded by scar tissue after one year, affecting the transmission of nerve signals. Therefore, the invasive brain-computer interface is still targeted at people with special needs such as paraplegics, and it is difficult to popularize. The BrainOS system uses a non-invasive, non-invasive hybrid brain-computer interface technology. By wearing the device, the system can collect and process the body’s EEG signals and EMG signals . This method does not need to cause wounds to the implanter’s body. Ethically speaking, it is easier to be accepted by the general public and the maintenance cost is lower.
After collecting human brain data, what can it be used for?
In the report of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019, the brain-computer interface was listed as one of the eight core key technologies of artificial intelligence. But in fact, the brain-computer interface should be the next generation technology of artificial intelligence. The reason is that the purpose of artificial intelligence technology is to make machines smarter, while the ultimate goal of brain-computer interface is to enhance humans, including intelligent mechanical prosthetics, neuromodulation and cognitive enhancement and other applications that empower humans.
