On September 22, Beijing time, Huawei’s Australian subsidiary said today that the company will continue to reduce the number of employees and investment in Australia. In 2018, Australia banned Huawei from supplying equipment for its 5G mobile network on the grounds of national security risks. Huawei criticized Australia’s move as politically motivated.
“n simple terms, the 5G ban on Huawei has allowed us to cut 1,000 high-tech and high-income jobs in Australia,” said Jeremy Mitchell, chief corporate affairs officer of Huawei’s Australian subsidiary, in a report. The email statement stated, “Our number of employees has dropped from 1,200 to less than 200, and it will be even lower next year.”
Mitchell said that since Australia issued the 5G ban, Huawei has terminated its Australian research and development investment of 100 million Australian dollars (about 72.3 million US dollars).
