Due to production delays related to the new crown pneumonia epidemic, coupled with the recent shortage of parts, the holiday season supply shortage of Apple’s new model iPhone 12 has appeared. In response to this problem, Apple has ordered more than 20 million old iPhone models.
People familiar with the matter previously broke the news that Apple is facing a shortage of power chips, and for this reason it can only add older models, including iPhone 11, iPhone SE and iPhone XR, but has not ordered iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max . People familiar with the matter said that these old iPhones will still be produced in China.
It is reported that Apple has required suppliers to produce more than 20 million old iPhones between October and the end of the year. This is equivalent to more than a quarter of Apple’s orders for the new iPhone 12 series this year, and the company expects shipments of new models to be approximately 75 to 80 million units.
An unidentified high-level source said that of the 20 million mobile phones, most of them are iPhone 11 and iPhone SE. Allegedly, each phone has received nearly 10 million orders, but no specific figures for iPhone XR were given. Apple said this will not only help meet shopping demand during the holiday season, but also help boost sales in early 2021.
A person familiar with the matter said: “The orders for the older models are indeed better than expected.” Another person familiar with the matter also said: “The demand for iPhone 11 is surprisingly strong, and this trend continues. But iPhone 11 Pro This is not the case with iPhone 11Pro Max.”
A third person familiar with the matter said: “Now is the time to stop the production of iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Continued production of them will affect the sales of iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.”
People familiar with the matter also said that any iPhone 11, iPhone SE and iPhone XR assembled after October will not be equipped with chargers or wired headsets. At the same time, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have reached the end of the product life cycle and will no longer be produced.
At 9 o’clock tonight Beijing time, Apple began pre-sales of the 5G iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max in China. Prior to this, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have been shipped on October 23.
Apple’s official website shows that in the US market, if you order a 128GB version of the iPhone 12 Pro online, the waiting time for delivery is 20 days. In the Chinese market, the waiting time for the same model is two to three weeks.
