Kali Linux 2023.2 system release: Fix Bugs and New functions

The offensive Security announced the launch of a new version of the GNU/Linux distribution, Kali Linux 2023.2, which brings new features, updates and new tools, as well as many improvements.

Kali Linux 2023.2 comes two and a half months after the 10th-anniversary release of Kali Linux 2023.1, which introduced support for the PipeWire multimedia backend for the flagship version of Kali Linux featuring the lightweight Xfce desktop environment.

PipeWire replaces PulseAudio in Xfce version to provide a better audio experience . Existing Kali Linux installations performing a full update with the sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade command will also receive PipeWire support.

The Xfce version of Kali Linux also adds the extension GtkHash to the Thunar file manager, enabling fast calculation of checksums on files. On the other hand, the GNOME product has been updated to the latest GNOME 44 version, and a new Tiling Assistant extension has been added to improve the default tiling experience on the GNOME desktop.

Kali Linux 2023.2 also revamps the i3 offering across the board, which includes a tiling window manager with a new lock screen, on/off menu, and two desktop variants, one with tiled windows and one with floating windows window.

Several new hacking tools have been added in this release, including Cilium-cli for installing, managing, and troubleshooting Kubernetes clusters, Cosign for container signing, Eksctl as the official CLI for Amazon EKS, and Evilginx as a stand-alone intermediary – A man-in-the-middle attack framework for phishing login credentials and session cookies, allowing two-factor authentication to be bypassed.

Other new tools include GoPhish, an open source phishing toolkit, Humble, a fast security-oriented HTTP header analyzer, Slim, a toolkit for shrinking container images, Syft Image and Filesystem, a tool for generating software bills of materials from containers, and the secure and Terraform, the tool for predictably creating, changing, and improving infrastructure.

The list of new tools in Kali Linux 2023.2 continues to include Tetragon, an eBPF-based security observability and runtime execution tool; TheHive, a scalable, open-source and free security incident response platform; Wsgidav, a general-purpose and scalable WebDAV server based on WSGI; Trivy is a tool for finding vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, secrets, SBOMs in , Kubernetes, code repositories, clouds, and more.

Other than that, the Kali menu has been updated and improved a bit, with new Hyper-V VM images , additional firmware has been added on all ARM images, and the Kali WSL rootfs build script has been overhauled.
