According to MSPoweruser reports, at the Microsoft Build 2019 developer conference, Microsoft announced Visual Studio Online for the first time. It is the network partner of Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code, allowing developers to develop and edit code on the device through the latest web browser.
Naijatechnews learned that in April this year, Microsoft renamed Visual Studio Online to Visual Studio Codespaces, which supports Git repositories, extensions, and a built-in command line interface, allowing developers to edit, run, and debug applications from any device.
Yesterday, Microsoft announced that Visual Studio Codespaces is about to end its support and its functions will be integrated into GitHub Codespaces . Existing Visual Studio Codespaces users can now transition to GitHub Codespaces, and existing Azure products will be retired in February 2021.
Although GitHub Codespaces provides an optimized creation experience for GitHub repositories, developers can still use Git repositories hosted elsewhere (such as Azure Repos, Bitbucket), but some additional steps are required .
Here is the complete schedule:
November 20, 2020
• Suspend the registration of new users of Visual Studio Codespaces
• Pause the creation of plans and code space
• Azure service users can still connect to their existing code space through the portal to access and backup any data.
February 17, 2021
• Service officially suspended
• All remaining plans and code spaces in the website are deleted.
• The website is deleted.
Microsoft says most people like rich integration, native, one-click experience. Since GitHub is a paradise for 50 million developers, it makes sense to work with them to resolve this feedback. However, after the GitHub native experience was released, we began to hear that these two different experiences caused confusion among users. Microsoft said that by integrating the current Codespaces experience into one can eliminate the existing confusion and further simplify the experience and solve the problem.
