Foreign media WMPU reported that Microsoft has confirmed that the upcoming Xbox Series S, which is mainly economical, cannot run the Xbox One X enhanced version for backward compatibility.
After Digital Foundry released the rumors, Microsoft revealed in a statement to VGC that this cheaper next-generation console can only run Xbox One games with lower resolution.
This is because the video memory of this game console is smaller than that of the Xbox Series X, and its GPU is slightly smaller than that of the Xbox One X. Although the GPU is more efficient for modern rendering, it is better for a game console designed around 1440P. That said, the 4K goal of Xbox One X is still too demanding.
“Xbox Series S is designed to be the most affordable next-generation game console, and it can play next-generation games at 60fps at 1440P,” a Microsoft spokesperson told game media VGC.
“In order to provide the highest quality backwards compatible experience in line with the developers’ original intentions, Xbox Series S runs Xbox One S version of backwards compatible games, while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, and faster loading times. And automatic HDR.”
Naijatechnews understands that Xbox Series S games can run at higher resolutions than Xbox One, but only if Microsoft releases backward compatibility patches (just like they did for the original Xbox and Xbox 360 games) , Or the developer releases an upgraded version of the S series for free.
Some games already provide these features, such as “Horizon 4” or “Marvel Avengers”, but not all Xbox One games within seven years of life will be updated.
