According to Wccftech reports, earlier this month, Lenovo released a support document informing its ThinkPad users that they may encounter BSOD and device manager issues after installing the August 2020 cumulative update. The company recommends disabling the “Enhanced Windows Biometric Security” setting in the BIOS Settings> Security> Virtualization menu.
More than two weeks later, Microsoft finally released an official support document detailing the cause of the ThinkPad’s blue screen problem and warning that the method suggested by Lenovo “may make the computer or network more vulnerable to malicious users or malware “.
Microsoft clarified that this issue was not caused by the August Patch Tuesday update, but by the July KB4568831 (build 19041.423) preview update. After installing the July or newer update, Lenovo ThinkPad devices may encounter Stop errors (also known as bugcheck) or blue screen errors.
IT Home learned that the codes associated with the error are “SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED” (in the “Stop Error Message” screen) and “0xc0000005 Access Denied” (in the memory dump file and other logs). The related process is ldiagio.sys .
Microsoft explained that these latest Windows 10 cumulative updates limit “If there is a security device (SDEV) ACPI table and is running virtualization-based security (VBS), how the process can access the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) device configuration space “. The company said that these new restrictions exist to prevent malicious processes from modifying the configuration space of security devices. Lenovo ThinkPads manufactured in 2019 and 2020 meet the conditions that trigger these errors .
The company wrote: “When the Lenovo Vantage software is running, some versions may try to access the PCI device configuration space in an unsupported way.” “This operation caused a Stop error on the related device.”
Microsoft also provided the same temporary workarounds that Lenovo had previously shared.
To temporarily alleviate this problem, edit the device UEFI configuration (in the “Security”> “Virtualization” section) to disable “Enhanced Windows Biometric Security”. This change will disable the SDEV table and VBS enabled restrictions.
However, the company added the following warning (this warning has been removed):
This solution may make your computer or network more vulnerable to attacks by malicious users or malicious software (such as viruses). We do not recommend that you use this alternative method, but provide this information so that you can implement this alternative method at your discretion. Use this alternative method at your own risk.
Microsoft said it is studying the patch, but did not disclose the expected time.
