According to Windowslatest reports, Microsoft’s new Edge browser is gradually entering Windows devices through Windows Update. Although Chromium supports more extensions and new features, all these improvements come at the cost of performance.
Naija Tech News learned that after Microsoft Edge switched to Chromium, RAM usage also increased. In order to reduce the impact, Microsoft began to research many new features to achieve better memory and CPU management.
The Microsoft Edge browser now has two advanced features called “Profile Guided Optimization” and “Link Time Optimization” . These features will help Microsoft Edge run faster. Microsoft said that in April they added some scrolling features to improve touch, scrolling experience and click accuracy on Windows.
Through the Windows May 10, 2020 update, the memory usage of Microsoft Edge has also been greatly reduced . The company claims that after developers implemented “SegmentHeap”, Chromium Edge’s memory usage dropped by 27%.
Since Edge is faster after implementing SegmentHeap, Google also decided to use the same feature for the Chrome browser, which is also built on the Chromium platform. Last year, Microsoft also reduced the file package of its browser by nearly 50%.
Although reducing RAM usage in the browser is important, Microsoft is working in other ways to make Edge run faster. Microsoft said that more performance improvements will be released in the next few months
PDF, security and other Edge improvements
On Ignite 2020, Microsoft confirmed that Edge has received support for PDF annotations, and users can collaborate on the same document. Similarly, Edge also gained support for viewing and verifying PDF digital signatures.
Microsoft plans to start rolling out PDF improvements with the Linux version of Edge next month.
