On Tuesday, Microsoft announced a development tool at the Ignite conference for IT workers to enhance the application’s call and text messaging capabilities.
This release demonstrated one of Microsoft’s attempts to develop its cloud business by entering a smaller personal market. The company may persuade existing customers to try these tools instead of establishing relationships with smaller software companies.
The collection of Azure communication services from Microsoft includes application programming interfaces that enable third-party applications to make voice and video calls, exchange chat messages, send text messages, and create phone numbers for inbound and outbound calls.
Companies such as 8×8, RingCentral, and Twilio already provide some of these features. Amazon Web Services (AWS), the largest cloud infrastructure provider, provides developer services for embedding text messaging and video calls into customer applications.
Microsoft executives have said that the company will not compete with its customers. Twilio’s main cloud provider is not Microsoft. The company relies on AWS to meet most of its cloud infrastructure needs. RingCentral uses its own data center infrastructure, while 8×8 utilizes its own data center, a combination of AWS and Oracle public cloud.
If the concept of Microsoft being able to run video conferences and chat conversations sounds familiar, it is because it makes Microsoft Teams (microsofteams) a competitor, which is a competitor to Slack and Zoom. Microsoft vice president Scott Van Vliet (Scott Van Vliet) said in an interview on Monday that Microsoft customers can now use the same technology within the team. Over time, Microsoft hopes that customers who use Azure communication services can connect to the team.
Van Vliet said that people in other areas of Microsoft, such as the department that develops the Azure Active Directory service, have expressed interest in using Microsoft’s cloud-based communication services in their applications. Since then, it has become clear that Microsoft should disclose these technologies more widely.
More than one-third of Microsoft’s revenue comes from commercial cloud product groups (including Azure public cloud), commercial subscriptions for Office 365 productivity applications (including teams), commercial LinkedIn services, and cloud versions of Dynamics 365 enterprise applications. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Microsoft sought to grow its commercial cloud by improving its sales processes in specific industries and releasing bundles for frontline employees.
Also on Tuesday, Microsoft announced Azure Orbital, a service for processing satellite data. The company said later this year that the Teams communications app will allow people presenting the presentation to appear in the foreground, while the app displays PowerPoint slides in the background.
