Microsoft Win10X will abandon support for Windows desktop drivers

Windows 10X is an operating system launched by Microsoft for dual-screen devices as well as traditional laptops. It was officially unveiled at the Surface conference in October 2019.

A Microsoft support document discovered by Windows Latest confirmed that Microsoft is abandoning the old Universal Driver classification model and will soon classify drivers as Windows desktop drivers or Windows drivers.

Naija tech news understands that Windows drivers need to meet strict reliability and service requirements and can be used on Windows 10 and Windows 10X.

Drivers that do not meet the requirements will be classified as Windows desktop drivers, and these drivers can only be used in Windows 10 2004 and above. Windows desktop drivers do not need to be certified by the Windows hardware compatibility program, while Windows drivers are mandatory.

Windows drivers need to follow the following guidelines:

  • Comply with DCH design principles
  • Follow the principle of driver package isolation
  • Follow API layering requirements
  • Pass the Windows hardware compatibility program certification process and use the hardware lab kit.
