News from NTN House September 27 It was reported a few days ago that Microsoft has obtained the exclusive license of OpenAI’s GPT-3 (Generative Pretrained Transformer 3) pioneering autoregressive language model.
Although Microsoft is very satisfied with the deal, Elon Musk, one of the founders of OpenAI, does not seem to be satisfied.
He said on Twitter that “exclusive license” seems to be “the opposite of openness” and that “OpenAI is basically captured by Microsoft.”
Of course, to a large extent depends on what the exclusive licensed content Microsoft has obtained.
Naija Tech News was informed that Microsoft made it clear in the press release that OpenAI will still be able to sell access to GPT-3 through its API according to its usual intentions, and will be able to continue to develop new models.
OpenAI told The Verge, “This transaction has no impact on continuing to access the GPT-3 model through OpenAI’s API. Existing and future users will continue to use our API to build applications as usual.”
What Microsoft gains is access to the source code and ability to modify it. Microsoft told The Verge that its exclusive license allows it to uniquely access the underlying code of GPT-3 , which contains advanced technologies that it hopes to integrate into its products and services.
Of course, Musk may hope that OpenAI can release GPT-3 code to everyone for free, but this is something that OpenAI has never thought of. He pointed out that this technology is too open and easy to be abused and does not allow unmonitored access. OpenAI will monitor the usage of its API and will cut off users who use it in unexpected and harmful ways, such as bots that create spam political messages. Probably OpenAI believes that Microsoft will not do this.
When talking about his plan, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief technology officer Kevin Scott (Kevin Scott) pointed out that this technology can “…directly assist humans in writing and composing, describing and summarizing Large chunks of long-form data (including code), creativity and ingenuity in fields such as transforming natural language into another language-the possibilities are only limited by the ideas and scenarios we bring.”
