On September 23, according to foreign media reports, at the “Battery Day” event held on Tuesday local time, electric car manufacturer Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the company plans to establish a A new cathode material factory to help reduce supply chain costs and simplify the cathode production process.

Musk said that the current process efficiency is not high, Tesla is improving the process to reduce the cost of cathode materials by 76%, and will not generate any waste water.

At the “Battery Day” event, Tesla announced that it would produce cobalt-free cathode materials for electric car batteries. This announcement is part of the company’s initiative to produce batteries instead of buying batteries.

In addition, Tesla also released a new 4680 battery at the event. This battery has a diameter of 46mm and a length of 80mm. The power output is increased by 6 times, the cruising range is increased by 16%, and the cost per kilowatt hour is reduced by 14%.

Tesla said that compared with the 2170 cylindrical batteries currently used in Model 3 and Model Y, the overall energy density of the battery has increased by 5 times.

On the eve of the “Battery Day” event, that is, this Monday, Tesla said that the company’s products released at the event will not be mass-produced until 2022.

At the same time, Musk said that the company plans to increase rather than decrease the purchase of batteries from partners such as Panasonic, LG Chem, and CATL.
