The Defense Committee of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom released a 5G network security report on Thursday, urging Prime Minister Boris Johnson to consider implementing a 5G ban on Huawei two years in advance. According to the current plan, the UK plans to ban the use of Huawei equipment in 5G networks in 2027.
These lawmakers wrote in the report: “If pressure from allies to remove Huawei equipment more quickly continues, or China’s global status changes significantly, the government should consider whether the idea of removing Huawei equipment before 2025 is feasible. The move will definitely put a heavier burden on telecom operators and the economy, but international tensions may force the UK to take action.”
In July of this year, the Johnson-led government stated that by the end of this year, telephone companies will be prohibited from purchasing 5G equipment from Huawei and will be forced to remove these equipment from the network completely by 2027. British officials stated that the sanctions imposed by the United States in May made it impossible to verify the security of Huawei’s supply chain. Huawei had limited influence in the UK before and was considered a controllable risk.
It is expected that the British Parliament will hold a debate in the coming months to vote on the 2027 ban and make it law. But some MPs said they hope the government will take action in advance.
According to the report, if the ban is implemented two years in advance, the government should consider compensating operators such as BT Group and Vodafone Group for dismantling Huawei equipment before the end of its service life. BT Group stated that compliance with the current ban will result in a loss of US$646 million.
The report of the Defense Committee of the British House of Commons also recommends a review of China’s presence in other key areas of the British economy.
