Although Samsung’s current high-end TV series use QLED technology, the company is developing multiple technologies for its future TVs. Samsung has launched some TVs that use microLED technology, and is also developing TVs based on Mini-LED and QD-OLED. According to reports, the South Korean technology giant aims to sell 2 million Mini-LED TVs next year.
According to data from market analysis company TrendForce, Samsung will launch a new lineup of QLED TVs using Mini-LED backlight technology in 2021. The lineup is expected to adopt 4K resolution, including 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch and 85-inch size TVs. Thanks to Mini-LED backlight technology, these TVs are expected to provide a contrast ratio of 1 million:1, which is significantly higher than the 10,000:1 provided by the current generation of TVs. Through at least 100 local dimming zones and the use of 8000 to 30,000 high-voltage Mini-LED chips, such a high contrast can be achieved.
Naijatechnews understands that Samsung’s upcoming Mini-LED QLED TV series is expected to provide higher brightness, high contrast, and better HDR and WCG (wide color gamut) performance. Currently, Apex, Epistar, FitTech, Macroblock, Sanan Optoelectronics and Saultech are competing to provide Samsung with their Mini-LED chips, but their solutions are still in the proofing stage.
Mini-LED displays not only have significantly better image quality than LCDs, but also have higher cost performance than OLEDs. Therefore, the adoption rate of Mini-LED and microLED is expected to rise in the next few years. Apple is expected to launch iPad Pro based on Mini-LED display later this year. Even LG may launch its Mini-LED TV for the first time next year.
