The Swedish regulator announced on Tuesday local time that it would prohibit the use of Huawei and ZTE telecom equipment in its 5G network before the spectrum auction scheduled for next month.
The Swedish Post and Telecommunications Administration (PTS) stated that the permit conditions were formulated after evaluation by the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Security Agency.
Under pressure from the United States, European governments have been evaluating the role of Chinese companies in building next-generation networks. In July of this year, the United Kingdom ordered the complete removal of Huawei equipment from Britain’s 5G network by 2027, becoming one of the first European countries to do so.
Huawei and ZTE did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Sweden’s decision. PTS stated that companies participating in the auction must remove Huawei and ZTE equipment from their existing core functions before January 1, 2025. The so-called core functions of this regulatory agency refer to the service and maintenance equipment used to construct wireless access networks, transmission networks, core networks, and networks .
