Apple today announced that the electrocardiogram (ECG) and irregular heart rhythm notification functions will be available in South Korea as part of the upcoming iOS 14.2 and watchOS 7.1.
Although Apple has not confirmed the release date of the update, based on today’s press release and the fact that the GM version was released last week, the update seems to be coming soon.
As early as August, there was news that the ECG function had been approved in South Korea, but it took Apple another few months to prepare for its public release.
Apple Watch Series 4/5/6 now provides ECG functions in nearly 50 countries/regions , allowing users to directly measure by simply placing their fingers on the digital crown for 30 seconds. The irregular heart rhythm notification function will intermittently measure the user’s heart rhythm in the background and send notifications when abnormalities are detected.
Both of these features are considered medical diagnostics, so they need to be approved by each country’s regulatory agency, and this requirement has also slowed the introduction of these features.
In contrast, the blood oxygen function on Apple Watch Series 6 is considered a health function, not a medical diagnostic function, so it is not subject to strict regulatory review, which allows Apple to be available in more than 100 countries/regions at launch The function.
