Twitter users with a blue verified tick, who had earlier changed their display names casually are now stuck with the weird names. Musk took to Twitter to clarify that “any name change at all will cause temporary loss of a verified checkmark“. Besides this, Musk has also introduced a new Blue subscription that costs $7.99 per month.

Twitter locks names for verified accounts

Elon Musk hasn’t specified the exact timeline for when the verified mark will return back after a user changes their display name. The top executive has just mentioned ‘temporary’. If a user, who is willing to let off of the verified status, tries to change their name, they simply can’t as Twitter is reportedly throwing a ‘Denied’ error. It remains to be seen whether there will be any announcement made in this regard shortly.

This comes after Elon Musk declared that any account engaging in impersonation without clearly mentioning parody will be permanently suspended. While Twitter originally had a strong policy towards handling impersonation, they were given a fair warning before the suspension. That appears to have changed now.

For those unaware, Twitter has rolled out a Twitter verification subscription for iOS users in select countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Musk confirmed the subscription will be launched in India in less than a month. However, the India pricing of the subscription hasn’t been revealed yet.
