U.S. researchers discover new antibiotics through AI screening: promising to kill drug-resistant bacteria.

According to MIT News, researchers from the Broad Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University used deep learning and other AI technologies to discover a new class of antibiotics that can kill a Drug-resistant bacteria called Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) – This bacteria used to cause more than 10,000 deaths in the United States every year.

According to reports, the researchers used a significantly expanded data set to train a deep learning model and tested the effects of approximately 39,000 compounds on Staphylococcus aureus and three types of human cells from liver, skeletal muscle and lungs. Use test data to train the AI model.

Through training, the AI model will be able to predict the antibacterial activity and potential toxicity of compounds to human cells . Researchers have discovered compounds that can kill microorganisms while minimizing adverse effects on the human body.

The scientists thus successfully identified a new potential class of antibiotics, including two compounds with potential as candidate antibiotics. Each compound was able to reduce the number of resistant bacteria by a factor of 10 when tested in two mouse models: a skin infection with the drug-resistant bacteria and a systemic infection with the bacteria .
