Microsoft founder Bill Gates (Bill Gates) has been committed to building a carbon neutral society to reduce the impact of human activities on climate change. On Monday, local time, Gates gave a speech on how to continue to travel without emitting greenhouse gases in the future. His solution is: “Use clean electricity as much as possible to drive all vehicles, and find cheap alternative fuels for all other fields.”
Gates said: “In order to prevent the worst impact on climate change, we need to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions in every economic sector within 50 years.” “To change our way of life requires a lot of innovation.”
Gates said that the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States is the transportation sector. However, although electric vehicles can be used for short-distance travel and work, it is still difficult to replace standard cars, city buses, and garbage trucks, because electric vehicles cannot be used for long-distance transportation or heavy loads . He said: “Therefore, passenger planes, cargo ships and heavy-duty trucks need cheap alternative fuels.”
Gates is optimistic about the production of biofuels from plants or agricultural by-products, but he said, “biofuels need more innovation before they become an option for low-cost long-distance transportation.”
Gates said that electricity can also be used to drive aircraft. The only problem is that its price is 3 to 7 times that of fossil fuels.
“By using electricity to combine the hydrogen molecules in water with carbon molecules in carbon dioxide, we can create a liquid fuel that can work on existing engines. The carbon dioxide used in this process can be captured directly from the atmosphere, So using this fuel will not increase total emissions.”
