Win10 prevent the installation of unauthenticated drivers
With the cumulative update of Patch Tuesday in October 2020, Microsoft has made a change to strengthen Windows’ verification of driver software. This change was introduced to prevent malware from using hardware drivers to damage Windows 10 devices.
As part of these new security improvements, Microsoft said that if Windows cannot verify software publishers, Windows 10 will prevent users from installing OEM or manufacturer drivers.
Although the new driver verification mode is important for security, if Microsoft cannot verify the driver, this change may cause Windows 10 driver errors.
When verification fails, users of all supported Windows 10 versions may see two driver error messages. The first error message is “Windows cannot verify the publisher of the driver software”, and the second error message is “There is no signature in the subject”.
Both of these error messages mean that Windows has found an incorrectly formatted catalog file in the driver verification, and the driver installation will fail.
If you get the above two errors when installing the driver from the OEM or driver manufacturer’s website, Microsoft says that you need to contact the manufacturer and ask them to upload the driver that has been properly repaired.
Naijatechnews understands that users are only likely to encounter these problems when applying an old version of the driver update. The new drivers released by Intel, AMD or Nvidia are compatible with the new verification mode of Windows 10.
It is also worth mentioning that Microsoft is working on some improvements to prevent drivers from disrupting the installation of Windows 10. For example, Microsoft now allows hardware partners (Dell, HP, Intel, etc.) to request Windows 10 feature upgrades when they discover driver compatibility issues during testing.
Similarly, Microsoft is also exploring new machine learning technologies to reduce compatibility issues caused by driver updates on Windows 10.
