September 1st, a bug or design flaw in Windows 10 caused the taskbar jump list (right-click menu) to slow down on some computers. Microsoft said it is investigating the issue.
Naijatechnews understands that the Windows 10 taskbar comes with a feature called “jump list”, which has been in existence since Windows 7, allowing users to right-click the application icon to access frequently used items.
For example, when you right-click the Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge icon pinned to the taskbar, you can find items you are working on recently, websites you visit frequently, and the option to close the browser window.
But if you carefully observe the animation of the taskbar right-click menu, you will find that there will be a 200-250ms delay before the menu appears .
“This is far beyond the ideal human-computer interaction time. It is a constant frustration. I don’t want to wait for my computer, especially when doing simple and repetitive actions. I know it should be able to perform about ten times faster. Complete these actions.” Google engineer Bruce Dawson pointed out that he observed this delay on a device with 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD.
It is reported that the jump list delay of Windows 10 occurs in all programs, including Notepad .
Bruce also pointed out that the Windows team can work in many ways to solve the performance problem of right-clicking on taskbar items.
Fortunately, the bug report has been approved by Microsoft Senior Project Manager Rich Turner. According to Rich Turner, Microsoft’s product team is currently investigating the report, and they will share the findings soon.
It is reported that if you are using flagship hardware, you may not notice the performance problem of the taskbar, but on low-end hardware, especially on old devices, the delay may be obvious.
