Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Mark Zuckerberg) on Thursday pointed the finger at Apple’s App Store, saying that the platform hinders innovation and competition.
Zuckerberg’s remarks specifically mentioned the continuing dispute between Apple and various game-related applications, including Epic Games. It was also in the context of Zuckerberg and Apple’s CEO Tim Cook’s discussion on the issue in the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. The two companies made the announcement within a month of their alleged anti-competitive behavior.
In a webcast Thursday with employees, Zuckerberg said Apple “as the gatekeepers of content on the phone with a unique curb force” . He also claimed that Apple’s App Store “has hindered innovation and hindered competition” and allowed the company to “collect monopoly rent.”
“This is the innovation that can really improve people’s lives,” Zuckerberg said, “and Apple just refused.”
Zuckerberg also said that Apple’s attempt to ban Epic Games’ Unreal Engine was a “problematic” and “very aggressive move” .
Apple was prohibited by the U.S. District Court from revoking the Unreal Engine developer account, but the court also rejected Epic Games’ request for a temporary restraining order, which requested the restoration of “Fortress Night” on the App Store.
Just the day before Zuckerberg’s webcast on Thursday, Facebook warned advertisers that the new privacy features in iOS 14 could cause advertisers’ revenue to drop by as much as 50%.
On Thursday, Facebook also claimed that Apple blocked the update of its social media applications, which informed users that Apple would take 30% of in-app purchase revenue.
Earlier in August, Facebook complained that Apple forced it to release a “bad” version of the Facebook game app in order to be accepted by the App Store. Previous reports showed that due to various violations of developer guidelines, Apple blocked the app at least five times.
Naijatechnews understands that the controversial relationship between the two technology giants can be traced back even longer. In 2019, Facebook was found to use its corporate certificate to bypass App Store restrictions and allow users to download a data collection “research” application. Apple later temporarily revoked the certificate.
