Google encountered an antitrust lawsuit this week and was accused of engaging in anti-competitive behavior, including exclusive behavior related to the extraction of 30% of Play App Store transactions.
The US law firm Hagens Berman filed the lawsuit in California federal court to seek monetary and injunctive relief over Google’s anti-competitive practices, hyper-competitive Google Play app distribution, and in-app payment processing fees. The plaintiff Pure Sweat Basketball is listed as the only plaintiff in this case, although Hagens Berman encourages other developers to step up the class action.
According to the press release, the lawsuit hopes to clarify that Google is “continuously abusing its market power, including repelling competition, stifling innovation, and suppressing consumer choice” and imposing a 30% super-competitive transaction fee on application developers. Like Apple, Google also imposes a commission on app store payments and in-app purchases.
