Oppo has unveiled a fourth smartphone with the “A55” model name – well, this one is an Oppo A55s 5G, to be precise. We are yet to understand what the “s” stands for as the phone is basically the same as the Oppo A55 5G. Also note that this is quite different from the other Oppo A55s 5G, which was launched in Japan last year. There’s also the 4G model, Oppo A55.
This model is powered by the Dimensity 700, a 7 nm chip with two Cortex-A76 cores (2.2 GHz), six A55 (2.0 GHz) and a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. And a sub-6 5G modem, of course, a key selling point over the 4G A55. The Japanese model used a Snapdragon 480, by the way.
The original A55 5G had 4 GB of RAM as base, this one starts at 6 GB. There is also an option for 8 GB of RAM (LPDDR4x in both cases), storage is always 128 GB with the option to add more via the microSD card slot. Note that ColorOS 11.1 can add 2 GB of virtual RAM (and yes, the phone is running Android 11).
The display is a 6.5” LCD with HD+ resolution (20:9) and a standard 60 Hz refresh rate, just like the A55 5G (and unlike the other A55s 5G, which has a 90 Hz HD+ display). The screen has 4,096 levels of dimming, but we didn’t see any mention of expected brightness. No toughened glass either.
The punch hole for the selfie camera contains an 8 MP sensor. On the back is a triple camera featuring a 13 MP main module, a 2 MP macro camera (4 cm focus distance) and a 2 MP depth sensor. Again, nothing has changed here – the three A55 5G models don’t measure up to their 4G sibling in the camera department (50+2+2 MP back, 16 MP front).
Same with the battery – all three models have 5,000 mAh power cells, but the 5G ones don’t have fast charging (the 4G one charges at 18W). The retail package contains a charger, a USB A to C cable, a protective case and a few other basics. The Japanese A55s 5G has a smaller 4,000 mAh battery, it really is a different phone despite the identical name.
