Steam is the largest PC gaming shop. Accounts can be highly costly, both financially and emotionally. It’s not fun to lose your account. So, how can you keep people from breaking into and stealing your Steam account? Continue reading to find out.
Act Quickly
You should take action as soon as you suspect that someone has hacked into your Steam account. The longer you wait to view it, the more significant the damage to your account might be, especially if credit card information is attached.
Password Alteration
If you can still log in, the first thing you should do is change your password. Because the intruder probably knows your old password, any other accounts with the same password could be compromised as well.
Log in to your Steam account using a browser, then click on the arrow next to your profile name and select ‘Account Details.’ Find ‘Account Security’ on this page and click ‘Change my password.’ Then you’ll have to go through a security check before you can reset your password.
Account Recovering
If you cannot log into your Steam account, you must use Steam’s account recovery method. Open the Steam login page and click the ‘Forgot your password?’ link just below the log in boxes. On the next screen, you’ll see different choices for regaining access to your account. There is also a particular option if a hacker has taken your account. Choose the one that best describes your situation and follow the instructions.
Steam Shield
If you aren’t already utilizing Steam Guard, Valve’s two-factor authentication service, consider enabling it. You may use it via email as well, but the app is more safe and integrated. Navigate to the security area of your account details page and select ‘Manage Steam Guard.’ There, you can enable Steam Guard and choose if you want the email and app versions.
