Apple is developing a replacement solution for EU DMA to help users easily transfer data from iPhone to Android phones

Switching from the iOS platform to the Android platform is not easy, even harder than most people imagine.

In response to the EU DMA requirements, Apple has now confirmed that they are developing a “user-friendly” solution to allow iPhone users to easily transfer data to “non-Apple phones” (i.e. Android phones), with a tentative target of 2025 Autumn of the year.

Apple has just updated the “DMA Compliance Report Non-Confidential Summary” document, which mentions some future changes to iOS. One of the plans is to improve the “portability” of user data between iOS and different operating systems.

Apple plans to further improve its user data portability. There are already third parties providing such migration solutions to help users transfer data between devices with different operating systems. To further expand these options, Apple is developing a solution to help mobile operating system providers develop more user-friendly solutions for transferring data from iPhone to non-Apple phones. Apple aims to launch this solution by the fall of 2025.

Judging from Apple’s description, this seems to mean that Apple only intends to provide corresponding tools or APIs to other manufacturers (such as Samsung, Google, and other OEMs) so that these manufacturers can develop replacement software for their mobile phones.

We noticed that Apple currently provides a “Transfer to iPhone” application for Android users, which is designed to help users transfer data from Android devices to iPhones. Now this development project is just the opposite.

In addition, Google has recently improved the way to transfer user data from iPhone to Android phones, but the application is still very limited by iOS. It still cannot transfer data such as text messages, wallpapers, and chat history, nor can it transfer eSIM, files, and saves. Data such as passwords or browser bookmarks.

However, given that Apple’s move is in response to DMA, it is believed that this solution will probably only apply to Android phones within the EU.
