Launched with the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year, Galaxy AI has been expanded to 9 flagship models released last year. A new report indicates that Samsung has given up on developing the Galaxy AI features with One UI 6.1 update to Galaxy S22 and other flagships.
Samsung plans to release One UI 6.1 update for the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21 series this month. However, the software will lack the AI-powered feature that has been rolled out to the Galaxy S23 series and other flagship handsets released last year.
A Samsung Electronics official said, “The number of models eligible for the update will increase this month, but there are no plans to introduce additional Galaxy AI features.” As a result, AI features will only be applied to models released up to last year.
Key Galaxy AI features are real-time translation, chat assist, circle to search, note assist, and generative editing. This allowed older smartphones to take advantage of features on the 2023 flagships. However, these tools were expected to be available on 2022 models too through an update this month.
Flagships released last year had specs that were largely capable of handling AI features. Meanwhile, it has been found that the 2022 models are difficult to adopt Galaxy AI due to chipset performance and operating mode. It was judged that it would be difficult to implement Galaxy AI features with software updates alone.
Samsung may reconsider, but there’s no guarantee.
