Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Summary
- The Galaxy Z Fold 4 looks and feels better, but it’s still heavy: As someone who complained about the Z Fold 3’s narrow cover display, I appreciate the wider front panel on the Fold 4. I also like the slimmer bezels on the main screen.
- Dragging and dropping makes life easier: I’ve taken the first round of photos vs the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and it’s awesome that I can use a split screen setup and drag pics from the camera roll directly into Google drive. You can’t do that on an iPhone.
- The crease is still quite visible: You don’t notice the crease on the Z Fold 4 all the time, but it becomes an eyesore when you’re using an app like Google Maps, especially in direct sunlight.
- The cameras take excellent photos: I’ve done some testing vs the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 more than holds its own against the best camera phone. Portraits and flower shots are particularly compelling, though the Z Fold 4 fell a bit behind Apple in some cases. See the comparisons below.
- Good performance and benchmark results: The Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip delivered strong benchmark results on Geekbench, 3DMark, and our own video editing test. It’s generally faster than the Galaxy S22 Ultra but behind the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Review
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 when unfolded has the main display of a 7.6-inch Dynamic 120Hz AMOLED touchscreen with a 1768 x 2208px resolution. And when folded, the outer screen measures 6.2-inch AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate. The display supports an S-pen and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
This year, Samsung has stepped up the camera quality of the Galaxy Fold 4 to the flagship level. On the rear is a triple camera system with a 50MP OIS main camera (instead of 12MP on Galaxy Fold 3), and the telephoto is 12MP with OIS and a 12MP ultrawide lens. While upfront the selfie is 10MP.
At the helm of performance is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 5G Chipset paired with 12GB RAM + 256/512GB storage. The battery capacity is 4400 mAh with 25W charging support. More so, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will boot the latest Android 12 OS out of the box with up to four years of OS upgrades and five years of security updates.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4smartphones have already received a battery boost of sorts with their new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoCs, which the brand claims can deliver a 30 percent boost in battery life. But One UI 4.1.1 has also brought along a new battery-boosting performance profile that is said to enhance the battery life of these foldable even further. The news comes as both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 pre-orders go live in India today.
As reported by 9to5Google, the new Performance profile for the foldable can be found deep in the Settings app of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, where users can now choose between two profiles – “Standard and “Light”. The new profiles seem to replace the earlier ones which could be found in Settings> Battery and Device Care> Battery> More battery settings> Enhanced processing on the Galaxy Flip 3.
While the “Enhanced processing” mode would speed up the overall processing of the phone (in terms of apps and smoothness), Samsung’s description made it clear that it uses more battery life to deliver the same. The new performance profiles found in the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 models offer the user a choice between “Standard” processing, which according to Samsung’s description is recommended for a balance of performance and battery life, or “Light” where the system prioritizes battery life and cooling efficiency over processing speed. Compared to the current models, the new phones basically allow the user to prioritize battery life over performance, versus the previous mode which basically allowed a speed boost with the default set to saving battery life.
It isn’t clear as to how much of a difference the two performance profiles make. But a Reddit user Dudi4poLFr put up a thread explaining that there is a noticeable impact between the Standard and Light modes but also concluded that Light mode cuts down on the high-performance core and Adreno GPU, bringing down power consumption when running benchmarks. The user did conclude that even with Light mode on, “the phone feels snappy and responsive” and that it will only impact games and demanding 3D applications.
