Telecom Egypt and Tejas Networks, an Indian company specializing in optical, broadband, and data networking products, have entered into a memorandum of understanding to enhance telecommunication research and development, manufacturing facilities, and skill development in Egypt. Tejas Networks plans to apply its experience from the Bharatnet (Rural Broadband Project) and NKN (National Knowledge Network) projects in Egypt.
Additionally, as part of this partnership, Tejas will set up technical support services in Egypt to assist customers locally and across the wider Africa and Middle East region.
Amr Talaat, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, stated that the partnership would result in the “localization of world-class communications products, new Indian investment in Egypt, job creation, and the development of research cadres in various fields of communications.”
Anand Athreya, CEO and Managing Director of Tejas Networks, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to assisting Egypt’s local telecom manufacturing ecosystem, as well as research and development, network planning, installation, and maintenance.
This development comes one month after Telecom Egypt received the country’s first 5G license. In January 2024, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) issued a 15-year license to Telecom Egypt to operate 5G, with a cost of $150 million.
Telecom Egypt has been strenuously working on enhancing its network infrastructure and technical capabilities. In February 2024, the mobile operator collaborated with 4iG, a Hungarian IT solutions provider, to construct an express subsea cable connecting Albania and Egypt.
Upon completion, the subsea cable will establish a high-capacity connection spanning from Africa and Asia to Europe, facilitated through Egypt, the Mediterranean, and Albania.
Furthermore, Telecom Egypt, along with Telin and e& Carrier & Wholesale Services, joined hands in the same month to form a consortium dedicated to the development of the ICE IV Project. This endeavor entails the construction of a subsea cable system that will link the Intra Asia region to India and the Middle East.
According to a report by Mordor Intelligence, the Telecom Market revenue in Egypt is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.65% over the coming five years.
