Samsung Electronics may be in trouble over a likely protest by unionized workers. The company’s workers union is in favor of a strike as the management has failed to reach an agreement with workers over talks of wage hikes.
While workers are readying for protest, the company’s management might manage to satisfy them as it has not had a strike since its founding in 1969. Last month, Samsung agreed to offer an average 5.1 percent pay raise for the year.
Meanwhile, the unions have demanded a 6.5 percent pay increase with an additional paid day off. As a result, wage negotiations between Samsung and the labor union broke down in February after rounds of talks.
Sources state that 20,853 out of the 27,458 members participated in the vote held from March 18 to last Friday. After the voting, it was announced that 74 percent of the total (20,330) members voted in favor of the strike.
This whopping support by unionized workers granted them legal authority to strike if a 10-day mediation period failed to resolve the controversy.
