According to data from Dataforce, Tesla Model Y seems expected to become the best-selling car in Europe in 2023.
Tesla Model Y sales in the first ten months of 2023 are already far ahead of its closest competitor Dacia Sandero. Furthermore, Tesla’s sales are expected to increase in the last two months of the year, as Tesla typically makes large-scale deliveries at the end of each quarter and year.
If true, it would be the first time that an electric vehicle (EV) has been Europe’s best-selling car for an entire calendar year.
Preliminary data released by Automotive News last week showed that Sandero leads Model Y by about 289 units in sales so far this year. The figures include approximately 92% of sales in the European Union (EU), European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the UK. However, another 8% of sales were not accounted for at the time of initial reporting, including the key market of Sweden. In Sweden, Model Y sales reached 14,139 units through October, compared with only 1,048 Sandero units.
When data from Sweden and other markets are added in, the Sandero loses its lead, with Model Y sales of 212,517 units to the Sandero’s 197,482 units . The Model Y accounted for about 73% of the 291,404 vehicles Tesla sold in Europe in the period that ended in October.
The Model Y has been Europe’s best-selling car for six months, while the Sandero held the number one spot in January, April and October. In July, the Volkswagen T-Roc took the title.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said earlier this year that he expected the Model Y to become the best-selling car in the world.
Last month, Tesla’s deliveries in Europe reached a milestone of one million vehicles.
