The earthquake warning function of Xiaomi mobile phone has started trial operation in Indonesia, compatible with MIUI 12/12.5/13 models
Xiaomi announced that it had officially launched the trial operation of the mobile phone earthquake warning function in Indonesia . By turning on the feature, Xiaomi smartphone users in Indonesia can instantly know the magnitude and location of an earthquake when it occurs nearby .
Naijatechnews has learned that Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) utilizes the principle that radio waves travel much faster than seismic shear waves , providing people with an early warning time of several seconds to tens of seconds before the arrival of shear waves. After the Xiaomi smartphone enables this function, when the earthquake monitoring agency detects an earthquake, it will synchronize the early warning information to the Xiaomi server through a dedicated channel, and Xiaomi will use the fast channel to push the early warning information to users in the affected areas.
Each notification from Earthquake Warning will display the magnitude of the earthquake, estimated time of arrival on the phone screen, and the intensity of the earthquake in the warning. Each phone triggers an early warning based on the seismic intensity of the surrounding area. Users in different locations will see different countdowns and intensity. Earthquake warnings in Indonesia are only issued when the earthquake intensity is 4 or above, or the MMI (Modified McCarley Intensity) scale used by the Indonesian Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG). The use of this feature requires a mobile data connection .
Earthquake Warning is compatible with Xiaomi phones with MIUI 12, MIUI 12.5 and MIUI 13 in Indonesia . Xiaomi Indonesia has completed a closed beta on phones that support the feature and expanded it to more users. For the consideration of user privacy protection, this function is disabled by default and requires user authorization to enable it. When an early warning occurs, the mobile phone will emit a warning sound.
Xiaomi said that the earthquake early warning function on mobile phones was initially launched by Xiaomi in cooperation with the High-tech Disaster Reduction Research Institute in Chengdu, China, and was the first to implement applications on Xiaomi smartphones. With the introduction of the earthquake early warning function into Indonesia, Xiaomi has also started to enable this function on Xiaomi mobile phones in Indonesia, making Indonesia the second country in the world that can receive earthquake early warning on Xiaomi mobile phones.
