In the morning news on May 18, it was reported that Hugo Barra, vice president of Facebook’s augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) department, announced his departure.
Barra posted on Facebook: “Today is my last day of work at Facebook Reality Labs. In the past 4 years, I have participated in many projects, which are more exciting than the things I have encountered throughout my career. It is more challenging; I also met some of the smartest and most kind people, and I am really happy.” Now Bara is ready to “explore the field of medical and health technology.” Barra believes that people need tools to understand health deeply and control health consequences, but the whole society still lacks such tools.
Prior to this, Barra was the vice president of Google’s Andorid product management team, and then joined Xiaomi as the global vice president of Xiaomi . Joined Facebook in 2017 and worked for the Oculus VR team. In 2019, Bara became the vice president of the AR and VR department, mainly to help Facebook build a global AR/VR partner ecosystem, which later became Facebook Reality Labs.
Not long ago, Facebook just showed off consumer-grade smart glasses. In September last year, Facebook stated that smart glasses will be launched at some point in 2021, but it seems to want to cool down the product, and I don’t want everyone to expect too much. In March, the Facebook CFO stated at the meeting that this smart glasses is not the ultimate technology Facebook pursues in the AR field.
Facebook CEO Zuckerberg expressed his gratitude to Barra for his work. He said: “You help the company build a next-generation computing platform and build a complete ecosystem around it. Thank you for everything you have done.” Zuckerberg also said : “Working with you has taught me a lot, and I am looking forward to your next products.”
