Want to record a slo-mo video on your iPhone? We’ll show you how to shoot and edit it using built-in apps.
If you’re a social media user, chances are you’ve seen someone share a slo-mo video. Once upon a time, creating this type of video required skill, high-quality recording equipment, and editing software. Nowadays, it’s something that can easily be done with an iPhone, without the need for third-party apps or software.
Keep reading if you want to learn how to record and edit slo-mo videos on your iPhone.
How to Record a Slo-mo Video on an iPhone
When you open your iPhone’s camera app, it will be set to take a photo as default (shown in the first image above). At the bottom of the screen is a menu that contains all the iPhone camera’s different settings. Tap on Slo-mo to activate slow-motion video recording.
At the top-right of the screen, you will see the letters HD and then a number. Tap HD to set the resolution you require. The higher the number, the better quality your video will be. It’s worth remembering that higher-quality videos will take up more of your iPhone’s storage.
If you’re in a well-lit area, you don’t need to have the flash turned on. However, when you’re in a dark environment, you’ll immediately notice the image on your screen is dark when in Slo-mo mode (as shown in the second image above). At the top-left of the screen is a flash icon. Tap this Flash icon and, when it turns yellow, your iPhone’s flash is enabled.
Once you tap the red Record button at the bottom of your screen, your flash will activate, and your video will appear lighter. This is visible in the third image above.
While your video is recording, you can take photographs by pressing the white Capture button at the bottom-right of your screen. These are brilliant if you want to upload the video to YouTube, as you’ll have a good quality image for your thumbnail. When you want to stop recording, tap the red Record button again.
How to Edit a Slo-Mo Video on an iPhone
Once you’ve recorded your slow-motion video, it’s time to edit it. This doesn’t require a third-party app. You just need to open the slo-mo video you want to edit, then tap Edit in the Photos app.
How to Trim the Length of Your Slo-Mo Video
Once the edit screen opens, you’ll see some editing options. The first thing to do is trim off any unnecessary video length. If your video is already the required length, you can skip this step. You crop your video length by dragging the yellow box in from each end, so you’re focusing on the part you want to keep, and create your slo-mo video.
How to Edit the Timing of the Slo-Mo Section
Once your video is the required length, it’s much easier to adjust the slo-mo section of your video. Underneath the yellow box you just used, there’s a small white bar. You can drag the two lines on this video to position them where you want them.
Where the lines are close together, the video will play at normal speed. The section with the lines spaced further apart is the slo-mo section of the video. It’s worth playing around with the positioning, as you can create some really cool effects by having the video go from normal speed to slo-mo and then back to regular speed at the right time.
How to Crop a Slo-Mo Video on Your iPhone
Once you’re happy with the video’s length and the slo-mo section, you can crop the video to make it fit better on social media, if you need to. You do this by tapping the Crop icon at the bottom of the screen. Here, you can flip or rotate the video, using the icons in the top-left of the screen. Alternatively, you can crop the video’s frame to be Square, 16:9, 5:4, 7:5, 4:3, 5:3, or 3:2 by tapping the icon in the top-right of the screen.
Once you’ve finished these edits, be sure to tap Done in the bottom-right of the screen.
The above video is how the slow-mo shown in the screenshots looked after editing. It’s worth noting this video has not been recorded in the highest resolution, so the video quality is not the best. This resolution is ok for sharing on social media, though.
How to Undo Changes Made to a Video During Editing
If you saved your slo-mo video, then realized you made a mistake, don’t panic! First, you need to open the video within Photos on your iPhone. Once you’ve done this, tap Edit in the top-right corner of the screen. Next, tap Revert in the bottom-right of the screen.
Finally, tap Revert to Original, and this will undo all the changes you made during editing.
If you want to, you can add filters, adjust the brightness or color, and make other changes within the edit section as well, but this isn’t always necessary.
How to Remove Slo-Mo From an iPhone Video
If you’ve recorded a video in slo-mo but want to convert it into real-time, these steps are for you. First, open the video, and tap Edit in the top-right corner.
The white line at the bottom of the screen shows the slow-motion section of the video. As before, where the lines are close together, the video will play at normal speed. If you drag both of the cursors to the left-hand side, so the screen shows just close-together lines, the video will play in real-time.
It might be easier to do this if you rotate your iPhone to landscape orientation, so you can see more of the video.
You Can Also Combine Videos on an iPhone
Now that you know how to record and edit slo-mo videos on your iPhone, why not take it to the next level and combine them? If you managed to edit your slo-mo video successfully, you should easily be able to handle creating a longer video with several different clips using iMovie.
